Important Dates and Events

Important Update:

As a part of the university's response to Covid-19, Virginia Tech is extending Spring Break until Saturday, March 21, 2020. It is expected that all students complete the "Extended Spring Break" form in the StarRez Portal. Please let us know if you have questions or concerns at housing@vt.edu or 540-231-6205.

This calendar may be amended as necessary to meet University requirements. University Academic Calendars take precedence in academic matters. Academic dates listed below are for convenience only.

Spring 2020

Residence Halls Open Early - Transfer/First-Year Orientation

  • Thursday, January 16, 2020, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Check-in for new first-year and transfer students who are registered for orientation on Friday, January 18, 2020, will be from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.
  • Dining services will be available starting Friday, January 17, 2020.

Residence Halls Open Early

  • Friday, January 17, 2020, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Check-in for new/returning/newly assigned residents will be from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. New students, especially those who have needs for Hokie Passport and other university services, will be encouraged to use this day to move in, as those offices will be open.
  • Residents returning from the fall semester can arrive any time or day after Friday at 12 p.m.; however, returning students are encouraged to wait until Saturday/Sunday to return. Returning students arriving before Friday, January 17, 2020, must be registered for Winter Break Housing in the StarRez Portal.
  • Corps of Cadets students and resident advisors should follow directives from command staff and residence life supervisors about their specific schedules.
  • Dining Services will be available starting Friday, January 17, 2020.

Residence Halls Open

  • Saturday, January 18, 2020, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Check-in for newly assigned residents will continue. Most university offices are closed on this day. Students returning from the fall semester can arrive any time or day after Friday at 12 p.m.; however, returning students are encouraged to wait until Saturday/Sunday to return.
  • No check-in is scheduled for Sunday, January 19, 2020.
  • Dining Services will be available starting Friday, January 17, 2020

Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday

  • Monday, January 20, 2020
  • University Closed, no classes; however, residence halls and dining centers will remain open. Housing and Residence Life offices are closed.

Spring Classes Begin

Housing Application Process for 2020-2021

  • Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at 8 a.m. through Friday, January 24, 2020, at 5 p.m.
  • Housing lottery sign-up for returning students only on the StarRez Portal
  • On or about February 1, 2020 - Returning, Undergraduate Student Housing Offers for 2019-2020 Distributed for returning students
  • Thursday, February 13, 2020 at 5 p.m. - 2020-2021 Returning Housing/Dining Contracts Due from Returning, Undergraduate Students

Commencement Housing Building Late Stay Request

  • Residents of Commencement Housing Buildings (Lee, New Hall West, Pritchard, West and East Ambler Johnston)
  • Students must register any request to stay past 12 p.m., Thursday, May 14, 2020, as their building will be used for Commencement Housing activities. Students who are graduating, participating in commencement activities, or otherwise have a extenuating circumstance should register their request by 5 p.m., Monday, March 2, 2020, using the request form on the StarRez Portal.

Extended Spring Break

  • Saturday, March 7, through Saturday, March 21, 2020
  • We expect all students to complete the "Extended Spring Break" form in the StarRez Portal.
  • Students noted in residence without an active break registration may face financial and student conduct penalties.

End of Spring Semester 2020 for students not involved with Spring Commencement

  • Thursday, May 14, 2020, 12 p.m.
  • Students must check out of their rooms within 24 hours after their last exam, but no later than noon, Thursday, May 14, if they are not directly involved with the commencement ceremony.
  • If you are graduating or are directly involved with the Commencement activities or have an extenuating circumstance, complete the Late Check Out Request form in the StarRez Portal (form active from April 1 until 2 p.m., Thursday, April 30, 2020)
  • Residents of Commencement Housing Buildings (locations TBA) must register any request to stay past 12 p.m., Thursday, May 14, 2020, as their building will be used for Commencement Housing activities.   • Additional Check-in: Saturday, August 22, 2020, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
    • Hokie Helpers are scheduled to assist with unloading cars to the extent possible Thursday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. On Saturday, check-in with your Resident Advisor between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.; however, Hokie Helpers are not scheduled for that time. See your assignment email or instructions on the StarRez Portal for details and parking information about your arrival.

Residence Hall Floor Meetings

  • Refer to schedule posted by residence hall staff members within your building or check directly with your resident advisor. All students should attend at least one floor meeting at the start of the semester.

  • Information about next academic year's housing options will be distributed.

Living-Learning Programs (LLPs) Application Process for Returning Students

  • Mid-October through Mid-November 2020
  • Residents will receive information about applying for membership in a living-learning program for the next academic year.
  • This applies to students who would like to:
    • Return to their current LLP
    • Switch LLPs
    • Join an LLP for the first time

Thanksgiving Break

  • Saturday-Sunday, November 21-29, 2020
  • Residence Halls in Low-Occupancy Period
    • Students staying during the break in their residence hall must register using the StarRez Portal (under Online Forms > Thanksgiving Break) if they will be staying for any part of the break period.
    • Students noted in residence without an active break registration may face financial and student conduct penalties. Dining plans are not operational during the Thanksgiving Break. Please see the Dining Hours page for details.

Residence halls close for all students not returning to on-campus housing for the Spring 2021 semester

  • Students must check out of their rooms within 24 hours after their last exam, but no later than noon, Thursday, December 17, 2020, if they are not directly involved with the commencement ceremony or if they have not registered for break housing.
  • If you are graduating or are directly involved with the Commencement activities or have an extenuating circumstance, complete the Late Checkout Request form under Online Forms in the StarRez Portal.
    • Late checkout request dates made after 12 p.m. on Thursday, December 17, 2020, will be automatically denied.
  • As of 10 a.m., Saturday, December 19, 2020, all students must be checked out except for the following:
    • Graduate/professional students living the Graduate Life Center at Donaldson Brown who hold a 12-month contract
    • Those registered for Break Housing and returning for the spring semester

Housing During Break

  • For residents returning for the spring 2021 semester who may need to stay during part or all of the winter break, you may register for winter break housing using the StarRez Portal (Online Forms > Winter Break) if you wish to stay for part or all of the winter break period.
  • Students noted in residence without an active break registration may face financial and student conduct penalties.

Winter Session 2020

Residential Classes (Blacksburg)

  • Monday-Saturday, January 4-16, 2021
  • Returning students registered for winter session residential (Blacksburg campus) classes should register for winter break housing (for part or all of the winter break/winter session period).
  • Registration for winter break will be available in the StarRez Portal with the winter form active starting December 1. You must register before occupying the residence halls during any break.
  • Dining services are not available during the winter break/winter session.
  • Students noted in residence without an active break registration may face financial and student conduct penalties.
