Fall Move-In

• July: First year and returning students will pick their move-in appointment.
• TBA: New cadets arrive.
• Tuesday-Thursday, August 18-20, 2026: First-time in college/transfer students arrive.
• Friday–Sunday, August 21-23, 2026: Returning civilian students arrive.
• Saturday-Sunday, August 22-23, 2026: Returning cadets arrive.

Living-Learning Programs (LLPs) Priority Application Process for Returning Students: TBA

• Residents will receive information about applying for membership in a living-learning program for the next academic year.
• This applies to students who would like to:
• Return to their current LLP.
• Switch LLPs.
• Join an LLP for the first time.

Fall Break

• Friday, October 9, 2026
• No Classes – University Offices Open Friday. Residence halls and dining centers remain open.

Thanksgiving Break

• Saturday-Sunday, November 21–29, 2026
• Residence Halls in Low-Occupancy Period.
• Students who plan to stay in the residence halls during Thanksgiving Break must register using the StarRez Portal (under Online Forms > Break Housing Registration). This form will open on October 23, 2026.
• Halls close at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 21, 2026 and reopen at 8 a.m. on Sunday, November 29, 2026.
• Students noted in residence without an active break registration may face financial and student conduct penalties. After November 20, dining operations will be open, but limited. Access to fitness facilities will likewise be reduced.

Residence Halls Close for the Fall Semester

• Residence Halls in Low-Occupancy Period
• Students are expected to depart campus within 24 hours after their last exam, but no later than 10am, Thursday, December 17, 2026, if they are not directly involved with the commencement ceremony or if they have not registered for break housing.
• Students who not returning to Virginia Tech for Spring 2027 and are participating in graduation ceremonies on December 17 should submit a Late Check-Out request through the StarRez Portal. The Late Check-Out Request Form will open on November 6 at 8 a.m. and close on December 14 at 12 p.m.
• Students approved for a late check-out must be moved out by 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2026.
• Student who need to stay for Winter Break Housing may log on to the StarRez Portal beginning November 6 to register. Students may continue to register during the break, if their plans change.

Residence Halls Open Early - Transfer/First-Year Orientation

• Friday, January 15, 2027
• Residence halls will open at 8 a.m. on Friday, January 15, 2027 for first-year and transfer students who are registered for Orientation.
• New students, especially those who have needs for Hokie Passport and other university services, are encouraged to use this day to move in, as those offices will be open.

Residence Halls Open

• Saturday, January 16, 2027
• Residents returning from the fall semester can arrive any time or day after Friday at noon; however, returning students are encouraged to wait until Saturday/Sunday to return. Returning students arriving before Friday, January 15, 2027, must be registered for Winter Break Housing in the StarRez Portal.
• Corps of Cadets students and Student Leaders should follow directives from command staff and Residential Well-being supervisors about their specific schedules.
• Housing Services will be open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Most other university offices will be closed, including Hokie Passport Services.
• Please see the Dining Center Operation hours for information on which locations are open.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday

• Monday, January 18, 2027

Spring Classes Begin

Commencement Housing Building Late Check-Out Requests for Spring 2027

• Opens at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2027 for residents of Commencement Housing Buildings.
• Ambler Johnston East, Ambler Johnston West, and O’Shaughnessy Halls will host Commencement Housing guests at the end of the Spring 2027 semester.
• The residence halls close at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, 2027 for all students not approved for a late check-out.
• The deadline for residents of Ambler Johnston East, Ambler Johnston West, and O’Shaughnessy Halls to submit a Spring 2026 late check-out request is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2027. Requests from residents of these buildings will not be accepted after this deadline. This allows Housing Services to make appropriate arrangements for welcoming our Commencement Housing guests.
• Late check-outs for spring are requests, not registrations. Late check-outs may be approved for students who are graduating, participating in commencement activities, or who can demonstrate an extenuating circumstance.
• The Late Check-Out Request Form is found on the StarRez Portal.

Spring Break

• Saturday, March 6 through Sunday, March 14, 2027
• Residence Halls in Low-Occupancy Period.
• Students who plan to stay in the residence halls during Spring Break must register using the StarRez Portal (under Online Forms > Break Housing Registration). This form will open on February 5, 2027.
• Halls close at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 6, 2027 and reopen at 8:00 am on Sunday, March 14, 2027.
• Students noted in residence without an active break registration may face financial and student conduct penalties. After March 5, dining operations will be open, but limited. Access to fitness facilities will likewise be reduced.

End of Spring Semester 2027 for students not involved with Spring Commencement

• Thursday, May 13, 2027 at noon
• Students must check out of their rooms within 24 hours after their last exam, but no later than noon, Thursday, May 13, if they have not been approved for a late check-out.
• If you are graduating, directly involved with the Commencement activities, or can demonstrate an extenuating circumstance, you may submit a Late Check-Out Request form in the StarRez Portal.
• Residents in Commencement Housing Buildings (Ambler Johnston East, Ambler Johnston West, and O’Shaughnessy Hall): the form will be active beginning at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2027. It will close for Commencement Housing Residents at 5 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2027.
• Residents in all other buildings: the form will be active beginning at 8 a.m. on April 1, 2027. It will close for non-commencement housing residents at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 30, 2027.

Final Residence Hall Closure

• Sunday, May 16, 2027 at 10 a.m.
• All students except graduate/professional students living in the Graduate Life Center at Donaldson Brown holding a summer housing contract must be checked out by this date. Undergraduate students returning to on-campus housing for summer school should follow summer housing information for transition planning.
