Matt serves as Associate Director for Academic Initiatives at Virginia Tech. In this role, he guides the growth and development of current Living Learning Communities (LLCs) in direct partnership with LLC program directors and faculty principals. Matt also works with potential future partners in the development of new and innovative LLCs. Additionally, he works closely with Residence Life colleagues and the Office of Learning Partnerships to ensure the Division of Student Affairs Aspirations for Student Learning are integrated into the work of Housing and Residence Life. Prior to working at Virginia Tech, Matt worked in residence education at Baylor University and the University of Dayton. Matt earned his master’s degree in student affairs in higher education from Miami University and his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Slippery Rock University.
Matt’s favorite Aspiration for Student Learning is Self-Understanding and Integrity. He believes it is important and necessary for individuals to constantly evaluate who they are and what they value, so they have a guiding compass for navigating the complex issues of our society today. One of his favorite quotes comes from Francis Bacon: “It is a sad date for a man (or woman) to die too well known to everybody else, and still unknown to himself.”
Matt enjoys traveling to visit family and friends, outdoor activities like running, biking, hiking, kayaking, watching off-beat movies, and the simplicity of a good cup of coffee and a book.
