The housekeeping and maintenance staff of Housing and Residence Life take care of the residence halls, creating a clean and well-maintained environment for our students. At night and on weekends, our on-call emergency staff is able to respond to situations quickly.

You can submit your own requests for repairs, replacement, or services, by using the work order system. You will be able to track progress on the request, and provide customer service feedback on the service received. Resident advisors (R.A.) will be responsible for reporting work order requests in common areas (such as the hallway, bathroom, or lounge), while general students will enter work order requests for their individual room.

Work orders are completed on a priority basis as determined by the maintenance staff supervisors. Work orders affecting safety and those having significant impact on resident comfort are handled before convenience or low-impact work orders.

In the event of an emergency, the R.A. will contact our on-call staff to deal with the problem.

Emergencies: Any time there is uncontrollable running water (water flowing onto the floor, not a stopped up sink), electrical problems, or safety issues (broken glass, body spills, etc.) please contact the R.A. staff immediately.

Our office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. After 4:30 p.m., please contact your R.A. staff member or, if necessary, the Virginia Tech Police.


Although not generally a problem, bugs occasionally appear in a community of our size. If you have a problem, please submit a work order using the HokieServ system. Exterminators are scheduled to arrive on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month. Requests must be submitted by 8 a.m. on the Monday preceding the service day.

University Lofting Kits

Starting Fall 2011, all civilian resident rooms, with the exception of single-occupancy rooms in the Graduate Life Center at Donaldson Brown Hall, have university-provided, loftable furniture. Students in these rooms may request a "loft kit" to raise their bed to the higher setting. The student should either request such at the fall check-in station with the RA staff or, if during the semester, submit a work order to have the kit delivered. All rooms normally have 1 loft kit already in the room.

Slusher Wing and Tower have one bed lofted and one bed unlofted; the second bed cannot be lofted. Loft kits are limited so turn in your request promptly.

Our special projects team may deliver kits to the student room and leave written installation instructions. If students want the team to install the kit, then the R.A. should note that request on the work order and provide a phone number so that the team can schedule a time with the student directly.

Bathroom Cleaning Schedule

Bathrooms in the traditional halls are cleaned everyday and the showers are cleaned once a week. Suite bathrooms are cleaned two times per week and the showers are cleaned once per week. Private bathrooms (in Donaldson Brown GLC and New Hall West) are cleaned at winter and spring breaks by the housekeeping staff.
